August 2, 2016
Time draws near for the start of Religious Education classes for the approaching school year. The schedule for the upcoming year is a little different than last year, with the elimination of the 1st session (5-6:15pm) on Wednesday evenings. Grades K–4 will have classes on Sunday mornings from 11:15am to 12:15pm on the first three Sundays (approximately) of the month. There will be some Sunday dates that class will not be held because of conflicts with the parish schedule. Grades 5-8 will meet on Wednesday nights from 7-8:15pm.
The High School youth group gatherings will also be held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday nights, from 7-8:30pm. One night of these scheduled gatherings will be prayer, speakers and Bible study. The other night will be spent in community service projects. All high school students are asked to attend and those preparing for Confirmation are expected to attend.
The tuition remains the same as last year for grades K through Confirmation. The high school Youth Group will ask for a $50 per-family donation to help cover program expenses, but if this causes a financial burden, please contact Cathy Davidson.
Tuition and fees:
1 child $75
2 children $130
3 or more children $175
Youth Group $50/family
ALL STUDENTS FROM 4TH GRADE THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL WILL NEED A BIBLE FOR CLASS. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO USE THE NEW AMERICAN BIBLE WHICH IS AVAILABLE THOUGH OUR PROGRAM AT A COST, WHICH IS $7.00. BIBLES WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE DURING REGISTRATION OR FROM CATHY DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. TABS FOR MARKING BIBLE CHAPTERS ARE ALSO AVAILABLE AT A COST OF $7.00. It is much easier for the children if all are using the same Bible translation.
We are hopeful that class sizes will be able to be maintained at no more than 12 students due to space restrictions. The goal is to have a teacher and a helper for each class (or at least a substitute that will be willing to help). Students in grades 7 through 12 are encouraged to help the younger students. It is a good way for the upper classes to get the required community service.
Preparation for high school Confirmation will again take place on Sunday evenings, from 5-7pm. Students in 9th grade this year (or 1st year of preparation) to be confirmed in spring 2018. The sophomores or second year Confirmadi will be confirmed next spring in 2017. We are still waiting for the date from the Bishops office. I will let you know as soon as I know. Students are expected to maintain regular attendance through high school in order to participate in this sacrament. This Diocesan-wide policy will be followed at Assumption parish.
All freshman (including Dowling and Home School) will be expected to attend classes which will be on the first Sunday evening of every month from 5-7pm. They are also strongly encouraged (Father Dom considers it to be mandatory) to attend the high school gatherings on the second and forth Wednesday evenings of the month from 7 to 8:30pm. A meeting for all first year Confirmation students AND THEIR PARENTS will be held on the first night of class, September 11, 2016 at 5:00pm. The Confirmation program will be fully explained at that time.
The second year Confirmadi and their parents will meet in the Church also for a short meeting at 5pm on the first night of their class September 18, 2016. We will go over items of importance for the coming year. It is vital that all attend.
A registration form for students from K through 10 is enclosed. All students in grades K-10 can be put on the same form. Please return the registration form as soon as possible. Registration will be held after the Masses on the weekend of August 20 and 21st, and the weekend of August 27th and 28th. Registration forms are available in the literature rack at Church and can be found on the web site at www.assumptiongranger.org. The schedule and important notices will be posted on this site. There will be NO REGISTRATION on the first night of classes.
The desire of the Church is that children are formed in their faith throughout their entire school years. Assumption Parish policy states that a child must attend RE classes for both the year prior to and the year of the reception of a sacrament. First Eucharist and Reconciliation are celebrated in the 2nd grade so your child must be enrolled in an RE program for grades 1 and 2. You must also be a registered member of Assumption Parish to attend our program.
Please fill out the registration form completely paying close attention in noting any situations that might affect class for the child. If a child needs one-on-one attention, you may be asked to attend class to provide that support—our volunteers are not equipped to handle all the situations that arise with a child that requires special attention.
Please provide an e-mail address that you check frequently. It is often easier to contact people by e-mail than by phone. It is also imperative that we have a phone number that you can be reached at during class time in case of illness or emergency. Please make sure we have an email address that you check all the time in case of weather or other delays and emergencies that would affect the class times.
Teachers are needed to carry out this program. Thank you to those who have already indicated a willingness to share their faith with the children. If you would like to be part of this rewarding ministry, please let Cathy know as soon as possible.
Children and parents should access classrooms through the gym. Please utilize the church and gym parking lot for child drop off and pick up. Teachers will bring the children down to the gym at dismissal.
A new opportunity for parents will be offered at 5 o’clock pm (Wednesday) and during the 7 o’clock Wednesday session in the Church. The Adult Faith Formation committee will be hosting “A BIBLICAL WALK THROUGH THE MASS” study. Also the same program will be held on Sunday evenings at 7pm and Monday mornings at 8:30am. Watch the bulletin for more information.
The discipline policy of our program is as follows: If a student acts up in class and will not calm down with teacher intervention, the child will be sent to the Director of Religious Education. At that time a letter will be sent home with the student for the parents to sign and return to me. That will give parents the time and opportunity to discuss the behavior with the child. If the student misbehaves again in class the parent will be called to come and get their child. If a third incident happens the parent will be asked to attend classes with the child. If you have a special needs child, please arrange for someone to be with them at all times.
If you know of a new parishioner please pass this information on to them. My phone numbers are listed below. Brenda is also in the Parish office on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at
999-2239, ext. 13.
God bless all of you!
